Your life without a computer: what does it look like?
I won’t lie to anyone, I am definitely a person that has an unhealthy addiction with technology in general. I spend so much of my leisure time on technology, especially my computer, when I’m at home because all my gaming, interaction with friends in other areas, and learning happens requiring technology of some kind.
Without computers, I will include smartphones in that for this discussion, would include a lot of texts on my phone to keep in contact with friends. None of my closest friends live near me so I can’t just visit them face-to-face anytime I want to talk to them. It would include a lot of phone calls instead of virtual voice chat. My gaming would need to be single player or two player games that my partner would want to play because the internet would still be a computer of sorts.
The hardest part, I think, would be the lack of online learning. Entire Scientific Journals are now posted online in digital formats that everyone can view. Some of them are behind paywalls, but much of them aren’t, by National Institute of Health, for example, which would require a serious delay in information for me. I know there are benefits to not having this access, but I need much of it.
Not having Computers would be a fun experiment, but I think in the long term there isn’t a good way for me to make the progress I want to without them. I can read more for entertainment and learning, but for up to date Scientific Information, I really need to have access to the internet. Plus, for my mental health, most of my friends aren’t reachable in a face-to-face manner at all. I’ve found the best support groups online through sources like Discord.
I do believe that it’s a good idea to restrict technology useage as best you can, but I’m unsure how to do that timing wise or if it should be only allowing gaming and things of that nature for a small amount of time. For me, it’s difficult to block those things more frequently.
