There was a day that I was on my way home from work in the downtown area of the city I live in. I ride the bus to work and back when it starts getting too cold to ride my bike the 25 minutes it takes to get to work on time, but riding was very therapeutic for me.
This stranger asked me if they could use my phone, but I’ve dealt with too many people since moving to bigger cities that I refused to let him hold the phone. I called the number he mentioned for him and put the person on speakerphone so that they could get their ride, but without risking them taking my phone. This would turn into the best conversation I would have with a stranger on that bus since I moved to this city a year ago.
We talked about everything from work to the issues in the city that we live in. The issues with poverty, schools, and where we came from. I wish I could have better conversations like that all the time, but most people are not willing to talk like that to strangers anymore because of the risk.
